Is Technology Getting you down?
There are so many options for technology today, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. I have been in the IT industry for over 20 years and have seen so many technological changes during this time. If you have not noticed, Technology continually changes. Advances in technology can be a good thing since it can assist those who have on-line businesses. I’m here to tell you that if you have an on-line business, you do not have to go it alone. There are many companies / consultants available to assist you. I still get overwhelmed with technology since I’m from the era of mainframe systems. Everything I deal with today for my on-line travel business is web-based. It just takes me a little bit more time to figure out the technical know how’s(lol).
When I started blogging about my on-line travel business, I started out using blogger. Blogger is so easy to use, but I wanted more design options for my blog. My friend Cee Cee informed me about wordpress.org, not wordpress.com. I started using wordpress.org and loved it from the start. The design options are many and with the plugins, I install and watch the software work. The hosting company I use to maintain my wordpress blog is Host Gator. Which is one of the best hosting companies I have found. I use their hosting for maintenance of my WordPress blog. It’s inexpensive and has GREAT customer support.
I also assist others with getting their wordpress blogs setup. I provide consulting and setup services. My rates are very reasonable. Contact me on gottitravel@comcast.net for more information.
Below, I provide you with definitions of some of the most popular terms related to today’s computer and communication technology.
1. Podcasting – Podcasting is quickly becoming a buzz word among the techie crowd. So what is podcasting, anyway? Podcasting is online audio content that is delivered via Really Simple Syndication(RSS) feed. Many people liken podcasting to radio on demand. However, in reality, podcasting gives far more options in terms of content and programming than radio does. In addition, with Podcasting, listeners can determine the time and the place, meaning they decide what programming they want to receive and when they want to listen to it.
Listeners can retain audio archives to listen to at their leisure. While blogs have turned many bloggers into journalists, podcasting has the potential to turn podcasters into radio personalities.
2. Utterz – Utterz is the first mobile blogging service that allows anyone with a cell phone to blog his or her experiences while he or she is living them! How convenient is that?!
3. Twitter – Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users’ updates (otherwise known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.
Updates are displayed on the user’s profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. The sender can restrict delivery to those in his or her circle of friends (delivery to everyone being the default). Users can receive updates via the Twitter website, instant messaging, SMS, RSS, email or through an application such as Twitterrific or Facebook.
4. Google Chrome – Google Chrome is a web browser built with open source code and developed by Google. The name is derived from the graphical user interface frame, or “chrome”, of web browsers. A beta version for Microsoft Windows was released on September 2, 2008 in 43 languages.
5. Web 2.0 – Is a trend in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to facilitate creativity, information sharing, and, most notably, collaboration among users. These concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies (the practice of catagorizing content through tags). Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but to changes in the ways software developers and end-users use the internet.
6. Blogging – Short for “Web log,” A Blog is a frequently updated online diary or journal. It can be used for news, reviews, products, business news, organizations, personal thoughts, experiences, web links, photos etc. The unique useability of a blog is that information can be immediately uploaded to it, therefore making it a completely accessible application for all.
7. Widget – A visual element of a Web page, such as a button, entry field, or drop-down list. HATS applications transform host components into widgets.
8. Banner Rotator – Instead of having a bunch of banners on your site taking up space and increasing your site load time, the banner rotator is much more efficient. It allows the rotating of banners on your site one at a time. See at very top of my site(left hand side) for an example.
9. RSS – RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication”. It is a way to easily distribute a list of headlines, update notices, and sometimes content to a wide number of people. It is used by computer programs that organize those headlines and notices for easy reading.
10. Search Engine Optimization(SEO) – The process of increasing the amount of visitors to a web site by ranking high in the search results of a search engine. The higher a web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that site will be visited by a user. It is common practice for Internet users to not click through pages and pages of search results, so where a site ranks in a search is essential for directing more traffic toward the site.
11. Google Adsense for Content – Google AdSense is a fast and easy way for website publishers of all sizes to display relevant, unobtrusive Google ads on their website’s content pages and earn money. Because the ads are related to what your users are looking for on your site, you’ll finally have a way to both monetize and enhance your content pages.
12. Google Adwords – With Google AdWords you create your own ads, choose keywords to help match your ads to your audience and pay only when someone clicks on them.
13. Google Tool for Words – Use the Keyword Tool to get new keyword ideas.
14. Google RSS – is a free, Web-based reader for RSS feeds. You can find feeds on nearly every Web site. RSS feeds offer a simplified view of Web content down to just text, pictures and videos–minus the site’s style and formatting, which can sometimes hinder or befuddle casual reading.
Google reader lets you subscribe to these feeds as easily as typing them into your browser’s address bar, and lets you read them like you’re browsing through e-mail. There are many online RSS readers available, but Google is one of the best. It’s easy to get a grip on Google Reader basics, but there are several tips and tricks that can make it extremely productive.
15. Conference Calling – A conference call is a telephone call in which the calling party wishes to have more than one called party listen in to the audio portion of the call. The conference calls may be designed to allow the called party to participate during the call, or the call may be set up so that the called party merely listens into the call and cannot speak. It is often referred to as an ATC (Audio Tele-Conference).
Conference calls can be designed so that the calling party calls the other participants and adds them to the call. In most cases, the participants are able to call into the conference call themselves, by dialing into a special telephone number that connects to a “conference bridge” (a specialized type of equipment that links telephone lines).
Usually, most companies use a specialized service provider who maintains the conference bridge, or who provides the phone numbers and PIN codes that participants dial to access the meeting or conference call.
16. Order Processing Software – A sophisticated system that allows you to process and bill customer orders, perform customer service functions, and analyze sales activity.

You will find them in various formats and until the industry has a standard accessible in all devices these various formats will exist.

PDF requires the Acrobat Reader but this software comes on many new computers and if not included, it’s a free downloaded from Adobe http://www.adobe.com. Other popular formats include:

The page will usually display content that is a logical extension of the advertisement or link, and that is optimized to feature specific keywords or phrases for indexing by search engines.
In pay per click (PPC) campaigns, the landing page will also be customized to measure the effectiveness of different advertisements. By adding a parameter to the linking URL, marketers can measure advertisement effectiveness based on relative click-through rates.
